Don, I hadn't seen this survey when I wrote this a couple of weeks ago:

http://flipchartfairytales.wordpress.com/2007/08/24/hr-too-wimpish-to-drive-organisations/

It was a response to a CIPD article and a couple of other surveys.

While I agree that competence is important, sometimes I think HR people place too much emphasis on trying to sound knowledgeable about the latest model (or management fad).

I think EV has a point - much of this is about the mind-set, lack of confidence and low aspiration among many HR people - hence the title of my post.

Anyway, I've added you to my blogroll.

I had the privilege of working for an organisation with far-thinking, business orientated HR.
It seems that a lot of companies have Personnel Admin instead of HR.
If a CEO thinks that a arm of the organisation is not contributing, the CEO ought to be doing something about it.

Donald, brilliant post. I haven't read all of the other links to it, but I will tell you this, when I had to do a search for an HR executive for one oft he most prestigious firms on Wall Street, my stomach turned into knots. Why? Becuase of how HR people think. I call it the "hr disease". Hr people for whatever reason, seem to think their job is be "hr" people...and that's what they become. "HR idiot". Sadly enough, one of my clients said to the Chairman of the Board, "why can't Ev run the entire HR department for us?" Well, I'd rather cut my head off!

So what is it that HR people need to do? They need to become PARTNERS TO THEIR CLIENTS...THEY NEED TO THINK LIKE CEO'S..NO CONTROL FREAKS...

AFTER INTERVIEWING ABOUT 100 PEOPLE, I COULDN'T F IND ONE PERSON WHO WAS WORTHWHILE!!! They all looked alike, spoke alike, not one of them could think like an executive that was a partner.

They are so concerned with being "chief of nothing" that they end up being chief of nothing because that's how "line managers" perceive them...and probably always will until they stop thinking like "HR manager" and start thinking like CEO's!!!!

Anyway, I tagged you in a viral link meme on my Resource Economics blog, if you don't do it, just send me an email and I'll tag someone else...there are plenty people for me to tag if you aren't interested...so no biggy!

Hope all is well with you! Best wishes. Ev

Donald:

OK, I was drawn in by the title. I was in Corporate HR - many years ago - and the tune was almost exactly the same. This is an evergreen issue. People are our most important thing - but our HR department is strictly an administrative/bureaucratic function. It is a rule proven by the few exceptional HR Leaders who have become a critical part of their Sr. Leadership teams.
